The Gran Chaco, South America’s second-largest native forest is at immediate risk of collapsing

“Legal and irrevocable deforestation is happening at an incredible speed, with native Chaco forest land being converted into cattle grazing and cropland. One bulldozer alone can deforest one ha in a matter of two hours, resulting in the disappearance of 120 ha. per day in each new cattle land development, as deforestation projects work 24/7 and in groups of up to 10 engines at the time.”

One of the highest deforestation rates in the world 

From 1985 to 2016 the Gran Chaco suffered a loss of 14.2 million ha. (an area the size of England) due to deforestation. During the same period, emissions from land-use change and forestry in Paraguay soared a 98% (WRI CAIT). During the past 10 years, 2.5 million ha. of the Paraguayan Chaco were lost to deforestation for cattle farming. In 2018 alone deforestation reached 255,000 ha. (INFONA).

At the current deforestation rate, by 2025, all of the still native forest areas of the Paraguayan Chaco, which under current deforestation laws can be deforested, will have been converted into cattle or croplands.

Global GHG emissions are increasing as a direct consequence of the deforestation of native forests. In fact, a quarter of all emissions worldwide are caused by deforestation, forest degradation and land use changes, incl. agriculture. In Paraguay in 2014 GHG emissions from land-use change and forestry amounted to a staggering 78.2% of the country’s total emissions. (WRI CAIT).

How does Quadriz act?

In order to protect and preserve land carbon stock, QUADRIZ© secures native forest lands in the Gran Chaco of Paraguay under the immediate risk of deforestation. This is done by pooling carbon offset purchase commitments from worldwide corporations.

Through advance volume- and payment commitments for the offtake of carbon offsets, the participating corporations help QUADRIZ©; to protect and conserve the native forest land against deforestation, to certify the carbon offsets against the highest possible quality standards, and to commence its social and environmental protection programs in relation to the land. Concurrently and through their pool commitments, the corporations secure a considerable volume of carbon offsets to cover their needs for the compensation of their unavoidable carbon emissions. 

QUADRIZ© applies the VM0007 Methodology Framework to all projects which are Reducing Emissions from avoided Deforestation and land Degradation (REDD+). Carbon offsets are issued and VCS certified and verified (Verified Carbon Standard) with additional certification under CCBS (Climate, Community & Biodiversity Standards) with Gold Level for exceptional biodiversity benefits.

Quadriz carbon pool participants benefit from

Corporations pooling their carbon offset requirements with QUADRIZ© benefit from securing certified carbon offsets at fixed prices that act as a hedge against future price increases, whilst actively contributing to the conservation of one of the world’s main carbon sinks. 

Apart from supporting the local REDD+ projects which not only deliver measurable co-benefits aligned with the aims of the Paris Agreement, but also comply with the majority of the 17 UN Social Development Goals (SDGs), each pool participant will furthermore benefit from an improved regional perception, increased ESG rating, boosted brand image and increased employee engagement amongst others.


The biodiversity of the Chaco is under severe threat from the deforestation. Each pool participant enables QUADRIZ© to conserve the Chaco’s diverse biome of humid and semi-arid ecosystems of riverine forests, wetlands, and savannas, which is the home of 3,400 plant species, 500 bird species, 150 mammal-, 220 reptile- and amphibian species, incl. several endangered such as anteaters, giant armadillos, crowned eagles and jaguars. QUADRIZ© projects also secure the protection and conservation of several indigenous communities such as the Ayoreo and Sanapaná.
