Invest in nature now: why effective carbon credits matter more than ever

The Paraguayan Chaco forest covers 24 million hectares, and is particularly vulnerable— yet vitally important—in addressing the climate and biodiversity crises.

Our REDD+ Corazón Verde del Chaco Project represents an effective and long-term solution using carbon credits to protect the forest, its inhabitants, and avoid releasing the planet-heating carbon sequestered in its ecosystems into the atmosphere.

What are carbon credits?

Carbon credits are verified units representing the reduction/avoidance or removal of one tonne of carbon dioxide emissions. They are generated by carbon projects—ranging from reforestation and clean energy to the prevention of deforestation—and offer companies a way to compensate for emissions they can’t yet eliminate.

In today’s market, the integrity of those credits—and how they’re used and generated—matters more than ever.

Avoidance vs. removal: why avoiding emissions comes first

Carbon credits broadly fall into two main categories: removals, which absorb carbon already in the atmosphere, through actions such as tree planting, and avoidance, which prevent future emissions by, for example, stopping deforestation.

While removals are essential for long-term climate goals, stopping emissions at their source take priority.

Stopping emissions entering the atmosphere is the first step, before removing the over-saturation of existing atmospheric emissions.

REDD+ projects (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation) are the most immediate way to keep carbon out of the atmosphere while protecting ecosystems and livelihoods. These are not a substitute for reducing emissions, but an effective addition.

When should carbon credits be used?

Reducing ones emissions is first priority – but as carbon is entrenched in every aspect of our lives – the transition to low carbon will take time.  In the meantime, emissions that cannot be avoided can be compensated through carbon credits.

The climate community agrees that carbon credits should support—not replace—decarbonisation efforts. The Oxford Principles and the new Reduce and Invest” initiative both reinforce this: companies should reduce emissions internally as far as possible, and simultaneously invest in high-integrity credits to compensate for what remains.

Delaying this compensation only slows climate progress. The planet needs emission reductions now, and high-quality credits are a way to act today while growing sustainably for tomorrow.

Why is Corazón Verde del Chaco Project so important?

The Corazón Verde del Chaco project, developed by Quadriz, is Paraguay’s largest REDD+ initiative. Located in the heart of the biodiverse and vulnerable Chaco forest,  Corazón Verde del Chaco protects 32,000 hectares of private forestland that has been approved for land clearing.

Backed by Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) and Climate, Community and Biodiversity (CCB) Gold Level certification, this project forecasts to avoid over 5.6 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions in its first decade. But its impact goes far beyond carbon.

The Corazón Verde del Chaco project upholds the highest standards of transparency and integrity, ensuring its carbon credits are both credible and impactful.

Impacts of investing in REDD+

Avoiding Emissions & Preserving Ecosystems

Without interventions such as Corazon Verde del Chaco, forestland in the region is often cleared for beef production, releasing vast stores of carbon and erasing complex ecosystems. Quadriz’ project offers an alternative: protect what remains, and keep that carbon in the ground.

Protecting Biodiversity

Corazón Verde del Chaco safeguards critical habitat for jaguars, anteaters, endemic bird species, and more. In fact, 86% of native wildlife in the region is found nowhere else. Preventing deforestation here protects this irreplaceable biodiversity.

Supporting Local Landowners

Crucially, the project creates a new economic path.Private landowners can earn more from conservation than cattle, creating a shift in incentives. As more see the value in carbon farming, the region moves from extractive use to long-term stewardship.

Driving Community Impact

The project funds jobs, education, and infrastructure in local communities. It puts people at the centre of climate solutions because sustainability must also demonstrate equity.

Invest today: three ways to support Corazón Verde del Chaco

Businesses can support the Corazón Verde del Chaco project in three main ways:

  • Spot purchasing –buy verified credits over the counter from Quadriz directly, for immediate use in your climate strategy.
  • Multiyear forward offtakes – secure long-term volumes and lock-in pricing.
  • Project financing – fund project expansion and deepen your commitment and environmental stewardship.

Early engagement means access to trusted, high-integrity supply—and greater influence over how your investment shapes climate and community outcomes. It sends a message to internal and external stakeholders of your commitment to a climate positive future, and your support for meaningful climate action.

Why Sharing Your Commitment Matters

In a world of increasing greenwashing scrutiny, and short-term political shifts, some companies have chosen to “greenhush.” This essentially means staying quiet about sustainability investments for fear of reprisal. But silence stalls momentum.

By publicly supporting high-integrity projects like this, your company not only leads—it helps shift norms, encourage peers, and scale ambition across your sector. Visibility isn’t just marketing it’s leadership.
